This blog grew out of my efforts to find gainful employment after getting laid off in 2009. It took nearly six years to find that employment and, while things are pretty good for me personally (so far, at least), the devastation wrought by the Great Recession remains, often unremarked by Very Serious People.
While it is true that there are more jobs now, most of them suck. The gig economy is growing, while the social safety net shrinks under the relentless pressure of corrosive politics aimed squarely at the poor and vulnerable.
My aim was, and remains, to explore the roots of our economic inequality, suggest ways to get by in the short term, and raise holy hell with the powers that be to do something about it. Failing that, perhaps we can create new economies on the local level that can take us into a more equitable, humane, and sustainable future.
